New Simple Evaluation of Error Probability of Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation using the Saddlepoint Approximation

چکیده
This paper presents a simple and very accurate method to evaluate the error probability of bit-interleaved coded modulation. Modelling the channel as a binaryinput continuous-output channel with a non-Gaussian transition density allows for the application of standard bounding techniques for Gaussian channels. The pairwise error probability is equal to the tail probability of a sum of random variables; this probability is then calculated with a saddlepoint approximation. Its precision is numerically validated for coded transmission over standard Gaussian noise and fully-interleaved fading channels for both convolutional and turbo-like codes. The proposed approximation is much tighter and simpler to compute than the existing techniques and reveals as a powerful tool for practical use.

Closed-form Approximations and Applications
In this paper we develop closed form approximations for the probability density function (PDF) of the reliability metrics (L-values) in bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM). The expressions are valid for M-ary quadrature amplitude modulations (M-QAM) with Gray mapping when the metrics are calculated using the so-called max-log approximation. Based on the developed expressions, we also propos...
متن کاملNew union bound on the error probability of bit-interleaved space-time codes with finite interleaver sizes
In this paper a new union bound on the bit error probability of bit-interleaved space-time (BI-ST) coded systems is derived. Unlike existing performance analysis tools for BI-ST systems, the new bound provides a general framework for analyzing the performance of BI-ST systems employing finite interleaver sizes. The derivation is based on the uniform interleaving assumption of the coded sequence...
متن کاملBit Error Performance for Asynchronous Ds Cdma Systems Over Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channels (RESEARCH NOTE)
In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of CDMA in mobile communications. Bit error rate is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of CDMA systems. In this paper, we develop a technique to find an accurate approximation to the probability of bit error for asynchronous direct–sequence code division multiple–access (DS/CDMA) systems by modeling the multipl...
متن کاملBit and co-ordinate interleaved coded modulation
The diversity order is crucial for the performance of communication systems over Fading Channels. It has been shown by Zehavi that the diversity and hence performance of coded modulation over fading channels can be improved by bitwise interleaving at the encoder output, and by using an appropriate soft decision metric as an input t o the Viterbi decoder. A related approach is coordinate interle...
متن کاملComments on 'Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation'
Caire, Taricco and Biglieri presented a detailed analysis of bit interleaved coded modulation, a simple and popular technique used to improve system performance, especially in the context of fading channels. They derived an upper bound to the probability of error, called the expurgated bound. In this correspondence, the proof of the expurgated bound is shown to be flawed. A new upper bound is a...
